LIVETwo ways over the mountains, and in winter the right answer changes by the hour. The direct line runs US 26 through Government Camp and down US 97. The alternative swings south on I-5 and crosses Santiam Pass on US 20. This page puts both passes on one screen so the choice makes itself.
East through Sandy and Rhododendron to Government Camp, over Blue Box Pass, then south on US 97 from Madras through Redmond to Bend. About 175 miles. One pass, but it carries every Portland skier headed to Mt Hood on the same two lanes.
South on I-5 to Albany, then east on US 20 through Sweet Home and over 4,817 foot Santiam Pass to Sisters and Bend. About 190 miles, more of it wide highway, but the pass stands 800 feet higher than Blue Box and posts its own restrictions.
If one route is chained up and the other is bare, take the bare one, even if it is longer on the map. If both passes carry postings, the drive is a chains drive whichever way you go. If Government Camp is closed by a slide or a pileup, Santiam is the release valve, and the other way around.
Driving from the capital instead? Salem to Bend over Santiam Pass runs OR 22 through Detroit and Idanha to the same summit. Eugene drivers cross on Eugene to Bend, and Mt Hood skiers want Portland to Mt Hood. For the head to head, see the Portland to Bend route comparison.
